過去，很多學者都認為，地球物種多樣性是隨地質時間，逐步增加至現在水平，因此現今所看到的生物物種，理應比遠古時代為多。不過，最新刊於《自然：生態與演化》的研究則指，陸上生物物種多樣性，僅在某些時期增有增長，但隨後數百萬年已達到平穩期，而自恐龍滅絕後不久，過去 6,000 萬年陸上生物物種數量已經非常相似。

其實看化石也看到，每個時期生物都是百花齊放，近代生物不見得特別多

not necessary. actually, there is biodiversity variation through time in marine fauna and the number of families seems to increase gradually beside the mass extinction period when the biodiversity plummeted.
